On 15
November 15, 2017, Professor Ma Qiang went to Yiwu (Zhejiang Province) and
Guangzhou (Guangdong Province) for pre-fieldwork trip of his PhD student Syed
Ahmad Ali Shah. Prof. Ma has selected these two cities for Syed Ahmad Ali
Shah’s PhD research spots, an ethnographic research about the Pakistani
business community residing in the aforementioned cities. Both spent a day in Yiwu city, meeting with
Chinese businessmen engaged in business with Pakistanis. On November 17, 2017,
they visited Keqiao District of Shaoxing City) to meet Pakistani businessmen
related to textile business. They came to know that there are around 2,000
Pakistani migrant businessmen living in this small county, which makes it a
perfect place to study a diaspora.
On
November 20, 2017 they flew to Guangzhou, where they met Pakistani businessmen,
Chinese businessmen, visited Sen Yet Sun University and explored about Pakistani
in-migrants living in Guangzhou. They met Pakistani families living in the
city, fifty of whom were the mix couples (Pakistani men married to Chinese
women) which is helpful in studying Pakistani diaspora and exploring the life a
migrant in China. On November 21, 2017, they visited Pakistani conciliate
Guangzhou, and met with Mr. Hassan Akhtar, vice-Councilor General of Pakistan
and shared the idea of studying Pakistani diaspora in China. The ambassador
shoed a keen interest in the project and pledged to help on the Conciliate
part. He also said that it would be helpful in enhancing Pakistan China
relations in future.
